The Society for Post-Acute and Long Term Care Medicine has honored Dr. Charles Crecelius of BJC Medical Group with the 2019 Medical Director of the Year Award. This award recognizes the individual whose vision, passion, leadership, knowledge, and commitment succeed in taking patient care in the facilities they serve as medical director to exceptional levels of quality, excellence, and innovation.
With 30 years of experience as a board-certified physician in internal medicine and geriatrics, Dr. Crecelius not only dedicates himself to his patients, but continues as an Associate Clinical Professor of Medicine and Geriatrics at Washington University School of Medicine in St Louis. Dr. Crecelius has also served as Medical Director for Delmar Gardens Nursing Home Facilities for over 20 years.
“I enjoy balancing my primary care practice with the post-acute care practice because I am able to provide care to patients with a variety of needs,” Dr. Crecelius says. “Providing care through BJC’s Affordable Care Organization (ACO), and coordinating services with ACO staff to bring about positive patient outcomes, is very rewarding.”
As the Medical Director of the Missouri Quality Initiative for Nursing Homes (MOQI), a Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation Project, Dr. Crecelius has provided leadership and guidance to the operations team, physicians, and advanced practice registered nurses,(APRN), in each of the 16 facilities involved. He is skillful in communicating, readily accessible and willing to share his knowledge with everyone. By educating the APRN and reaching out to providers that have a higher transfer rate than desired for the MOQI project, Dr. Crecelius takes care to the next level with one-on-one communication and going above and beyond the normal call of duty.
In addition to working closely with other providers and of course patients, he works hand in hand educating the facility nurses to ensure their understanding of best practices when it comes to the treatment of patients. One example is Dr. Crecelius focusing on training nursing staff through case studies to prevent functional and cognitive decline. He helps each community improve their metrics through heightened sensitivity and experience in identifying early onset and treatment of common symptoms that typically overwhelm the elderly and contribute to avoidable hospitalizations. It is through this one-on-one communication and education that providers are encouraged to re-think their views on avoidable hospital transfers and can truly make a difference in patient care.
Dr. Crecelius will be accepting the award in March in Atlanta at the annual conference for The Society for Post-Acute and Long Term Care Medicine. Congratulations!
