The American Association of Nurse Practitioners, the largest national professional membership organization for nurse practitioners of all specialties, represents the interests of more than 248,000 licensed nurse practitioners practicing in the U.S. The State Award for Nurse Practitioner Excellence, founded in 1991, recognizes a nurse practitioner in each state who demonstrates excellence in practice.
Tammy has her doctorate degree as a family nurse practitioner, which she earned from Saint Louis University in 2014. She has more than 16 years of nursing experience, specializing in family medicine and caring for multigenerational families. Tammy has been practicing and building a practice at the Steelville Clinic, a rural health practice, for 12 years, since receiving her Master of Science in nursing degree from the University of Missouri – St. Louis in 2007. With a background at St. Louis Children's Hospital, she enjoys caring for patients starting as newborns and following them through adulthood. Tammy is the primary care provider at Steelville Clinic and enjoys providing personalized care to all of her patients.
"We have a small office, so we all become a family," Tammy explains. "When patients call, they know who they are going to speak with and who will care for them when they come into the office, which is an excellent way to receive care."
Tammy has also been the Vice President of the Southeast Missouri Nurses of Advanced Practice for the last 10 years. She has been involved with the Association of Missouri Nurse Practitioners since 2016, acting in the roles of board member, southeast Missouri state representative, and advocacy committee member. Tammy has been a part of multiple committees at BJC HealthCare, including involvement with choosing a system-wide electronic health record system and being the advocacy chair on the BJC Advanced Practice Provider committee.
Tammy also collaborates with the local school district providing priority visits to teachers and athletes to decrease missed work time. Teachers are allowed to come during their planning periods so they do not miss class time nor do they have to employ a substitute to cover their class.
Tammy boasts high best-in-class scores, which support health maintenance guidelines to keep her patients healthy. One of the most fulfilling aspects of her position is the ability to precept upcoming nurse practitioners every semester. She finds helping to guide others very rewarding.
Outside of work, Tammy enjoys scuba diving, traveling and spending time with family and friends. She has one son, who is a post-surgical nurse at Christian Hospital.
