Motherhood brings many challenges to a woman’s life. One of the first challenges for working moms to figure out is how long to take off from work after giving birth. I get this question almost daily; and it is a question that comes with much angst for many women. This is a very complex and personal question with no perfect answer.

I joined my 9-year-old daughter for lunch recently at her elementary school. As I stood in line with all of her peers who were half my size, I thought to myself, “This food can’t be good. No way am I drinking milk. Ugh!” The menu that day was popcorn chicken and mashed potatoes. The sides were a small basket of veggies, a cup of grapes and a mysterious container of small black chunks sprinkled with some brown bits.

The 2014 flu season is proving to be bad one with the number of reported cases and hospitalizations rising each week. In St Louis alone, we have had at least 15 deaths from the flu. Barnes-Jewish Hospital typically cares for the sickest of the sick and has had 9 deaths as result of flu infections. Unvaccinated pregnant women have lost their babies from becoming infected with the flu this year.
